How This Works

Council tax is set at Band D rate by each local authority. Other bands are calculated as fractions/multiples: Band A = 6/9 of Band D, Band H = 18/9 (double) Band D. The 1991 property values are used for banding in England and Wales (Scotland uses 1991 values too). Actual bills vary significantly by local authority — some charge 2× what others do for the same band.

If you believe your band is too high (neighbour's properties in a lower band, or the 1991 value seems wrong), you can appeal via the Valuation Office Agency (VOA). Warning: bands can also go UP if the VOA reviews them. Check similar properties in your street on the VOA website before appealing. You have the best grounds to appeal if you've just purchased the property and believe the 1991 equivalent value was underestimated.
