How This Works

A deed poll is a legal document declaring a change of name. In England and Wales, you can change your name simply by using the new name consistently ("common usage") or by executing a deed poll. Deed polls are not registered with any central authority unless enrolled with the courts. Most organisations (including passport office, DVLA, banks) accept an unenrolled deed poll signed by an independent witness.

Passport: straightforward — submit old passport and deed poll. DVLA: straightforward online. HMRC: update online or by post. Banks: require original deed poll or certified copy — may need to visit in branch. DBS checks: existing certificates cannot be changed — new one needed for employment. Academic certificates: most universities will issue a supplementary letter but won't re-issue degree certificates. Social media/email accounts: no legal obligation to use your real name.
